Butyl tape is a tape made from a rubber-like compound. It is a waterproof tape with corrosion resistance properties ideal for use around windows, pipes and insulation. Butyl tape contains a strong adhesive that is difficult to remove. It may take several attempts to completely remove all tape and any adhesive left by the tape.
As a first step, place a putty knife, razor blade or spatula under the edge of the butyl tape. Lift up to release the corners. After loosening the edges, pull the butyl tape back.
In the second step, mix hot water with a drop of liquid dish soap. Soak a rag or rag in water and place the cloth over the tape to saturate the tape so it cannot be removed. This helps loosen the adhesive. Use a putty knife, razor blade, or scraper to continue lifting the tape until all the tape is loose so you can remove it.
For the third step, apply a quarter-sized amount of a commercial adhesive remover product to a soft cloth. Rub in any remaining adhesive. Let the product soak in the adhesive for five minutes, or as recommended by the manufacturer.
In the fourth step, use a water damp cloth to wipe off the adhesive remover and remaining adhesive. Repeat this process until you have removed all excess adhesive.
